Listen To Me: Buddy Holly Fulfills Holly’s Dream of Supporting Young Talent

Maria Elena Holly, Buddy’s widow, told us “Buddy did everything he could to make sure that talented young musicians and songwriters got a real chance, he even started his own label – he called it ‘Prism’ – to make this possible. He would be especially thrilled, as I am, that so many outstanding artists are part of this effort to honor his personal commitment to recognize and help great young musical talent.”
This project carries on Holly’s legacy of boosting and empowering new artists. Since 2009, Songmasters has endowed The Holly Prize, an annual award juried and presented by the Songwriters Hall of Fame to recognize and support the “all-in-one songwriter,” an exceptionally talented and inspired young musician/singer/songwriter whose work exhibits the ambition and artistic qualities of Holly’s music. Listen To Me: Buddy Holly will also benefit numerous music-related organizations – including The Grammy Foundation’s “Grammy Camps” and Artists’ House Music – each of which support the artistic growth and professional development of young musicians and industry innovators.
Additionally, the winners of the Listen To Me National Talent Competition, launching later this Fall, will receive grants, cash and product awards, and performance opportunities to help launch their professional careers in music.

Second Holly Prize Awarded

Kendra Morris, winner of the Songwriters Hall of Fame 2011 Holly Prize, receives award from Regan McCarthy, Senior Partner of Songmasters, which endows the annual prize.

The Holly Prize, made possible by Songmasters, is administered and juried by SHoF as a tribute to the legacy of SHoF inductee and musical legend, Buddy Holly. The Holly Prize recognizes and supports the “all-in-one songwriter,” an exceptionally talented and inspired young musician/singer/songwriter whose work exhibits the qualities of Holly’s music: true, great and original. The 2011 Holly Prize winner is Kendra Morris.

“Buddy Holly was one of music’s true pioneers. His unique style and all-around talent as a songwriter, performer and producer is still a major influence on today’s music. He was committed to controlling his own artistry and to helping other young musicians do the same. We are thrilled that SHOF recognizes that same spirit in the next generation of songwriters.” says Jennifer Cohen, Managing Partner of Songmasters.

In presenting this year’s Holly Prize to Kendra Morris on June 14, 2011, Regan McCarthy, Senior Partner of Songmasters, said that “the directness, clarity and emotional truthfulness of Kendra’s lyrics, her amazing vocals, and her guitar mastery root her deeply in Holly’s musical lineage. They also make her, like Holly, a formidable talent.”

The Holly Prize was inaugurated in 2009, in conjunction with the announcement of Listen to Me™, Songmasters’ industry-wide, multi-media celebration of the True. Great. Original.™ artists of contemporary music recorded in their own styles by some of today’s leading performers in order to raise substantial support for the next generation of great music makers and entrepreneurs. Through this program, Songmasters will make direct grants to various industry charities – The Grammy Foundation, Songwriters’ Hall of Fame, and Artists House – whose programs support the development of exceptional musical talent.
